What Gets Cleaned Up After a Pipe Lets Go
A broken supply line leaves two separate jobs. One is the pipe, and that belongs to a plumber. The other is everything the water touched on its way down: framing, insulation, drywall, flooring, cabinets, and whatever was stored in the basement. The pages below cover that second job, split by where the water went and what let go.
Routing to a contractor near you can take a moment or two. Keep the line open until a person picks up.
The Cleanup Services, One Line Each
- Frozen pipe bursts. Lines in exterior walls, garage ceilings and crawl spaces that split in a cold snap and start leaking once they thaw.
- Ceilings and walls. Water tracking down from an upstairs bathroom or laundry line, through insulation, into drywall.
- Basements. Finished lower levels where carpet pad, laminate, framed walls and stored boxes take the water.
- Extraction and drying. The core work behind every job: removing standing water, then drying framing and subfloor to a measured target.
- Appliance and supply lines. Washer hoses, water heaters, ice-maker lines and toilet supplies, which fail any month of the year.
- Mold checks. For leaks that sat hidden, drying that stopped early, or a musty smell that showed up later.
- Commercial and rental units. Apartments, offices and shops, where water often crosses from one unit into the next.
Not Sure Which Page Fits?
| What you're seeing | Start here |
|---|---|
| Brown ring or a bulge in a ceiling | Ceilings and walls |
| Water on the basement floor and nobody's been down there all day | Basements |
| It was below freezing last night and now a wall is wet | Frozen pipe bursts |
| Puddle spreading out from the laundry room or under the fridge | Appliance and supply lines |
| The leak was fixed, but the room smells like a damp cellar | Mold checks |
| Water coming from the unit upstairs | Commercial and rental units |
What Makes One Job Bigger Than Another
The size of a cleanup has less to do with how dramatic the leak looked and more to do with how long the water ran, how many floors it crossed, and what it soaked into. Clean water caught early on a tile floor is a short job. The same water left overnight under laminate and behind a finished basement wall is a long one. The article on what affects burst pipe cleanup cost walks through those factors without guessing at numbers.
What This Line Isn't Set Up For
These pages deal with clean-water pipe failures. If water came up through a floor drain or toilet and smells like sewage, say so on the call so the contractor knows it's a different kind of cleanup. Pipe repair itself is plumbing work and needs a licensed plumber.
